Having itchy gums - These could be the reasons, take care!!

Just like our physical and mental health, oral health is also very important for us. In some persons, there would be a tingling sensation in their gum tissues and this is itchy gum. The people with itchy gum issues would find it uncomfortable.

There are several causes for itchy gums like poor oral hygiene, allergic reactions to certain foods etc. Truth is that these would affect the gums in different ways and this could lead to irritation, inflammation. In the end, the person could get an itchy sensation in their gums. It is necessary to know the exact reason for the itchy gum problem for effective treatment.

Various causes for itchy gum problem are

Gingivitis:
Building up plaque on gums and teeth could lead to gingivitis in us. Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease. The plaque formed would cause irritation, inflammation and redness of the gums. Gingivitis must be treated soon or else it could develop into severe gum disease in us.

Allergic reactions:
Itchy gums can also be due to allergic reactions to certain foods, dental items or due to presence of latex in the dental gloves etc. Here, our immune system would react to these allergens and as a result of that we could get irritation and discomfort in the gums.

Hormone changes:

The gum tissue would become very sensitive and prone to itching because of hormonal fluctuation and this would happen during menstruation or puberty, pregnancy or during menopause etc.

Dry mouth:
Insufficient production of saliva can cause dry mouth and this could lead to itchy gums. The acids produced by the bacteria would get neutralised by means of saliva. Absence of enough amounts of saliva could lead to the proliferation of bacteria and this could lead to irritation and discomfort in the gums.

Poor oral hygiene:
Plaque and tartar would get accumulated on the teeth and gums if proper oral hygiene is not followed. As a result, we could get irritation and itching etc in our gums.

Teething:
Especially in the toddlers, teething could result in itchy gums when the new teeth would push through the gums.
